Firelit Face of Tarahumara (Raramuri) Woman, Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre, Barranca Urique), Sierra Madre Mountains, Chihuahua, Mexico, 1971.Color, approximately 11.5”x 17.5” (29cm x 44cm).Archivally matted and mounted, framed in silver metal with plexiglass, approximately 17”x 24” (43cm x 61cm).Photographed as a transparency by Karl Kernberger; digitally printed (but not altered) posthumously by Aspen Color Lab in Albuquerque in 2000.Karl Kernberger (1938-1997) was a noted photographer, filmmaker and public television producer with a gifted artistic eye, guided by an anthropological sensitivity.His photography is featured in Wild Rivers of North America, Land of Clear Light, and Ghost Towns of New Mexico with Michael Jenkinson, Indian Running by Peter Nabokov, and Indian Rock Art of the SW, by Polly Schaafsma, as well as many other books and numerous magazines. His work has been posthumously purchased by photo archives at the Museum of New Mexico, Center for Southwest Research at the University of New Mexico, New Mexico Department of Indian Affairs, and the University of Washington, as well as by private collectors.Kernberger’s photographs have been exhibited at galleries in Santa Fe and Madrid, New Mexico, and museums in Tucson, Arizona, and Silver City, New Mexico.This photo is being offered by the photographer’s estate.
