Life: Smart studied under H. McCulloch. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy (1886-88), Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Society of British Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, Dudley Gallery and Dowdeswell Galleries. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Leicester Art Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery. In 1871 he was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, becoming a full member in 1877. In 1878 he joined the membership of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours and Royal Society of British Artists, a society that appointed JW its President in 1886 but forced him to resign in 1888.
