LARGE GLOUCESTER/CAPE ANN OIL BY WARD MANN-WELL LISTED " Lumper - Gloucester Pier ". Original oil on heavy masonite panel by Ward Palmer Mann ( 1921 - 2005 ): image/panel size: 28 inches by 22 inches: Signed and dated lower right - " Ward Mann - 1986 ". Original exhibition label of The Academic Artists Association with title " Lumper - Gloucester " - with it's original gallery price of $4,000, affixed to the panel/verso: Ward Mann's original studio label also affixed to the panel/verso with Mann's original inventory studio registration inventory number" 86010 ". Signed by Mann in ink pen above the number ( original frame ). Considered by many as one of the last of the great contemporay Cape Ann Colony painters, Ward Mann died last year at the age of 84.  In his lifetime Mann attained international recognition for his colorful thickly painted Cape Ann region oils that so beautifully blended Impressionism and Realism, distinguished by his unique and bold sense of Edward Hopper like crisp clear lighting. Mann was born in Detroit in in 1921. As a young man he studied at The Detroit Art Institute and The Scarab Art Club of Detroit - ( at the precocious age of 12 ). After serving in the South Pacific during WW II, he first earned a degree in engineering from the University of Michigan, while continuing to paint, and from the early 1960s, dedicated himself exclusively to painting. In 1974 he joined The Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, Mass ( An oceanside colony over 200 years old, considered America's oldest working art colony ). For more than 30 years Mann maintained his highly successful summer studio at Rocky Neck and his winter studio in Webster, Mass. Manns' art has been featured in numerous galleries and museums, including The Smithsonian.  He holds many important national awards and memberships, including  from The Salmagundi Club of New York, The Rockport Art Association, International Society of Marine Painters, American Artists Professional League, Hudson Valley Art Association, North Shore Art Association: Oil Painters of America, and has twice received the prestigeous SCNYC Tuttle Award in Painting.
