Description
Laurits Holst Early California Shipwreck 1869 Large Oil Item Description Offered here is a museum quality early California painting by Laurits Bernhard Holst, dated 1869.  This beautiful work depicts a shipwreck with stranded survivors clinging to the rocks.  Although the artist is well known as a European artist, the date of this painting (1869) coincides with the artist's time spent in California.  Painting is signed lower right "Laurits Holst 1869".The painting measures 24 x 42 inches and the overall framed size is ~32 x 50 inches.  Includes beautiful 19th century gold frame, which is also in great condition.Painting is in exceptional restored condition.  Painting was lined some years ago.  Under blacklight, there are scattered touchups, mostly in the upper right sky, though no repairs can be seen here when viewing the painting in normal or bright lighting.  Also no visible cracquelure. This painting has been in my own collection for many years.  It was previously from a collection in Santa Cruz, CA.Shipping: I will ship this via UPS Ground service.  I estimate the domestic shipping cost to be between $100 and $200, depending on buyer's location.  I will do my best to get the best rate possible.  I don't charge extra for handling or materials. Laurits Bernhard Holst (1848-1934)Born in Bogense, Norway on Aug. 20, 1848. An itinerant artist, Holst was active in California in 1869-70. The local press called him "an Eastern artist of much talent" who arrived "with the highest recommendations from prominent citizens of Chicago." His assistant in Chicago was Emil Carlsen who cleaned brushes in exchange for lessons. While in California, Holst painted along the Monterey coast, the Golden Gate, Clear Lake, and the Sierra.
