Description
Last second UPDATE: Yes, corners are joined with interior splines. Please see final image.UPDATED. As requested, new images will be found at the end of the listing. These newer images were taken with a flash while the earlier images were taken using studio lighting. They should show you almost every square inch of the frame's condition, with enough detail to make up for not being able to view it in person.Thank you for taking the time to view my listing. This auction is for an American Impressionist hand carved picture frame that originally housed Childe Hassam's, "The Fishermen, Cos Cob", circa 1907. You can view the painting by visiting the follow web address:http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=32398Size: Frame is 31 inches tall by 29 inches wide. Sight size is 21 1/2 inches tall by 19 1/2 inches wide. Accepts a painting 22 3/8 inches tall by 20 3/8 inches wide (original rabbet dimensions). Width of the moulding is 4 3/4 inches while the depth is 2 1/4 inches.Condition: Corners are loose and some areas of the outermost surfaces are worn down to the wood. Opening for the painting has been enlarged, top and bottom, to accept a different painting that was long gone from the frame when I purchased it. Requires conservation but overall is quite sound. When I first acquired this frame, I thought the pastel wash was a later addition but now I'm not so sure. There are no signs of it being applied at any of the numerous wear points and recent searching of Google has turned up two Hassam frames (by Carrig-Rohane), from the same period, with pastel washed accents. I don't know enough about his frames to state if the wash is original but I can tell you it appears to have been applied a long time ago.Early NYC art mover's label is pencil inscribed with the title of the painting, 'Fishermen, Cos Cob', and with the name of the artist, 'C. Hassam'. Dimensions are right on the button for a 22 1/4 by 20 1/4 inch painting. I think you can agree it's too unique to be a coincidence. For a couple of similar examples, please see the "Period Frames" section found in most of the late William Currier's art price guides. It will be the first frame pictured. Another example can be found in Lowy's "20TH CENTURY AMERICAN FRAMES FROM THE LOWY COLLECTION", on page 6. Both of those examples are signed Carrig-Rohane whereas this one is not. What you may also notice is both of those examples lack the added inner hand-carved foliate border. This really is one sweet frame that you don't get to see very often.Shipping: I pack with extreme care and have never had any item damaged in the mail. This will reach you safely. If you prefer to pick it up in person, there is a 5% discount for cash seeing as how I won't have to give a percentage to Paypal. Paypal is not available for item pick-up since the online proof of delivery they require, to prevent charge-backs, is non-existent.Please check out my feedback to know you can deal safely (and be happy as well) with me. Email me with any questions you might have. Phone number is on my eBay ME page if you'd prefer to call.Thank you, LarryOne final thought comes from a comment made by the illustrious and ground breaking frame dealer, Eli Wilner, to be found in an online article from the New York Times in 2005:A Little Frame Goes a Long Way by CLAIRE WILSON, Published: August 4, 2005"Nonetheless, Mr. Wilner said, period frames are increasingly in demand, with prices up 600 percent since 1990 (the year the Met held an exhibition of antique frames). Collectors and museums are especially willing to pay a premium if a frame is original to a painting. A frame made by an artist for a particular work is worth three times as much as a frame from the same period not determined to be for a specific painting, he said."http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/04/garden/04frame.htmlPlease consider this description to now be complete. Please click on the following images to see a larger image of the same view:                These images are clickable as well.
