Created in 1962, this color linocut is from the 6th State of 6 and numbered 26/50 in the lower left margin (the total edition was approx. 75).  The first state of this work is solely a portrait of a young boy, which transforms into what looks like Jacqueline, and then finally becomes the faun by the 6th State. Published by Louise Leiris, Paris, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris on Arches paper.      Depicting a bold and sensitive rendering of a faun, Picasso utilizes minimal white linear contours to work in contrast with the interior of the form and the background.  The delicate brown lines hatched within the faun are from the first state of this work, which is a portrait of a young boy that transforms into the appearance of possibly Jacqueline.  The softened effect of the face, hair, and upper chest of the original portrait contrasts with the vivid white lines which encompass the faun.  The duality of characters in this work plays with our notion of what portraits are possible of portraying, and begs to question whether the artist viewed the two subjects as one in the same.  With a solid black background, which gives a sense of depth to the image, the faun looks out at the viewer with a joyful countenance.  Using the mythological subject matter found in many of his works, Picasso gives the viewer a magnified view of a character that is typically illustrated on a smaller scale.  This large-scale portrait of a faun reflects importance and value Picasso placed on this image in tandem with the use of the boy and Jacqueline’s portrait, which has been found in many of the artist’s other works.
